Role Description

Provide day-to-day supervision and guidance to Fuel Tax Analysts responsible for the preparation, filing, payment, and reconciliation of fuel excise and other related tax returns.
Review fuel tax returns for accuracy, completeness, appropriate tax treatment, supporting documentation, and timely filing/payment.
Review associated general ledger reconciliations, investigate material differences and ensure reconciling items are appropriately resolved.
Monitor compliance calendars and ensure federal, state, and other jurisdictional filing and payment deadlines are met.
Prepare, support and/or review fuel and excise tax internal controls, including SOX-related controls, control evidence and financial reporting deliverables.
Support month-end close activities, tax accruals, reconciliations, adjustments and other required reporting.
Document and evaluate fuel tax processes, systems, risks and controls to strengthen the internal control environment and mitigate tax-related risks.
Support jurisdictional tax audits by preparing documentation, analyzing transactions, responding to information requests and coordinating with relevant stakeholders.
Review and assist with responses to tax notices, assessments, inquiries and correspondence from taxing authorities.
Lead the Fuel Tax team's business-support function, researching and resolving tax-related questions received from Operations, Accounting, Finance and other business teams.
Research applicable motor fuel and excise tax laws, regulations, tax rates, exemptions and jurisdiction-specific requirements and evaluate their impact on business transactions.
Provide guidance on the taxability of fuel products and transactions and assist in resolving complex tax treatment issues.
Communicate regularly with internal stakeholders and, where required, external taxing authorities.
Assist with the maintenance and validation of fuel-tax-related configurations within tax and financial systems.
Identify opportunities for process improvement, standardization, automation and stronger controls across fuel tax processes.
Leverage data analytics and technology such as Alteryx, Power BI and Avalara Excise to improve compliance monitoring, reporting and process efficiency.
Support departmental performance-management initiatives, including development and monitoring of KPIs, quality measures, compliance metrics and productivity measures.
Assist management with tax-related special projects and broader Finance and Company initiatives.
Provide coaching, technical guidance and knowledge sharing to junior team members.

Specific Knowledge & Skills

Strong understanding of U.S. motor fuel tax, fuel excise tax and fuel accounting.
Experience with fuel tax return preparation, review and reconciliation.
Understanding of general ledger accounting, account reconciliations and month-end close.
Knowledge of SOX/internal controls, financial reporting and compliance documentation.
Ability to interpret federal and state tax regulations and translate requirements into operational processes.
Experience supporting tax audits, notices and taxing-authority inquiries.
Strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
Strong data-analysis capabilities; experience with Alteryx and Power BI preferred.
Experience with Avalara Excise or similar excise-tax systems preferred.
Ability to leverage technology to automate and improve tax processes.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with Accounting, Finance, Operations, Technology and external taxing authorities.
Ability to supervise, coach and provide technical guidance to Fuel Tax Analysts.
