Job Overview

As a Lead Electrical Commissioning Engineer at Big Sky Operations, you will play a crucial role in managing all electrical aspects of assigned commissioning projects from initial engagement through turnover to the client. You will ensure that all electrical systems are tested and functioning in accordance with design specifications and client requirements, while maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage all electrical commissioning and integrated testing activities in accordance with the approved commissioning plan and client-defined scope.
• Serve as the electrical commissioning authority and on-site technical lead for data center and mission-critical electrical systems.
• Act as a trusted technical advisor to the client, providing clear guidance on design intent, constructability, risk, cost, schedule, and operational impact.
• Coordinate closely with OEMs, contractors, consultants, site teams, and client representatives to obtain accurate technical data and drive timely decisions.
• Participate in project, design, and commissioning meetings, providing expert input to align all stakeholders on commissioning scope, deliverables, and acceptance criteria.
• Review and approve commissioning-related design documentation, including OPR, BoD, single-line diagrams, schematics, protection studies, and installation drawings.
• Verify that all required OEM documentation, certifications, test records, and construction turnover packages are complete and approved before commissioning.
• Develop, review, and obtain approval of commissioning procedures, test scripts, and Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) for mission-critical electrical systems.
• Plan, execute, and witness Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Factory Witness Tests (FWTs) as required by the client.
• Supervise on-site commissioning activities to ensure compliance with uptime, redundancy, resiliency, and performance requirements.
• Enforce commissioning schedules and milestones to support early turnover, phased energization, and operational readiness.
• Track commissioning progress and provide clear, regular status updates to the Project Manager and client teams.
• Produce detailed commissioning reports, test results, and readiness assessments.
• Identify and communicate risks, issues, and constraints affecting schedule, resiliency, safety, or operational reliability.
• Track and assess scope changes and evaluate impacts to commissioning timelines, cost, and performance objectives.
• Support the Project Manager in evaluating scope variations, resource impacts, and mitigation or contingency strategies.

Required Skills

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field.
• Strong knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and control systems.
• Familiarity with commissioning procedures, testing methodologies, and industry standards.
• Knowledge of OSHA (or equivalent) safety requirements.
• Knowledge of Electrical Distribution Switchgear, Substations, Uninterruptable Power Sources (UPS), Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), Batteries, Emergency Diesel Generators & Load Banks.
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings and specifications.
• Excellent troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
