Description
We are hiring an Industrial Designer at QOSMIC to own the physical design language and build quality of our hardware products. You will work at the intersection of optics, mechanics, and electronics — translating engineering requirements into manufacturability, elegant, and robust designs for systems that operate in demanding environments.
This is not a styling role. You are embedded with the engineering team from day one, shaping how our products are conceptualized, built, assembled, and manufactured. You sit in design reviews with optical engineers, argue tolerances with mechanical engineers, and figure out cable routing with electronics engineers. Your work directly determines whether a system ships on time and performs in the field.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- End-to-end product design: Own the industrial design of optomechanical assemblies from concept through production. Create and maintain CAD models that are manufacturing-ready, not just visually complete.
- Design for manufacture and assembly: Select materials, specify finishes, define assembly sequences. You think in terms of what the shop floor can actually produce — sheet metal, CNC, 3D printing, casting — and design accordingly.
- Rapid prototyping and iteration: Build quick physical prototypes to validate form, fit, and function. You are comfortable in a workshop — 3D printers, hand tools, basic machining — and you use prototypes to make decisions, not slide decks.
- Design process and documentation: Maintain a structured design process: sketches, concept selection matrices, CAD models, detailed drawings, BOMs. Your documentation is clean enough that a vendor can manufacture from it without a phone call.
- Vendor and manufacturing coordination: Work with fabrication vendors and in-house workshops to take designs from file to finished part. Review first articles, flag deviations, and close the loop between design intent and production reality.
Requirements
WHO YOU ARE
PROFILE A: EXPERIENCED DESIGNER 2–5 years
Have designed physical products — ideally in hardware, aerospace, defense, or precision equipment. You have taken at least one product from concept to manufactured hardware. You have strong opinions on how things should be built and the shop-floor experience to back them up.
Regardless of profile, you must be:
- A B.Des/M.Des in Industrial Design (in the case of an M.Des, preferably someone with a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline).
- Strong CAD proficiency, preferably in SolidWorks. You model fast, model clean, and your assemblies do not break when someone changes a dimension.
- A well-developed design process. You can articulate why you made a design decision, not just show the output.
- Real workshop and prototyping skills. You have operated 3D printers, used hand tools, and ideally have some machining exposure.
- A working understanding of manufacturing processes — sheet metal, CNC machining, injection molding, additive manufacturing — and their design constraints.
- The ability to work across disciplines. You do not retreat into your CAD station. You seek out the optical engineer to understand beam paths, the electronics engineer to understand thermal loads, and the mechanical engineer to understand structural margins.
- Clear technical communication. Your drawings, BOMs, and design reviews are precise and unambiguous.
