Key Responsibilities

  • Collect and prepare samples of iron ore, coal, dolomite, limestone, DRI, char, and other process materials as per the sampling plan.
  • Conduct routine chemical analysis using standard laboratory methods and instruments.
  • Analyze key quality parameters such as:
    • Total Iron (Fe)
    • Metallic Iron (M.Fe)
    • FeO
    • Degree of Metallization
    • Fixed Carbon
    • Ash
    • Moisture
    • Volatile Matter
    • Sulphur and Phosphorus
    • Silica (SiO₂) and Alumina (Al₂O₃)
  • Perform physical tests including size analysis, bulk density, and moisture determination.
  • Record, verify, and report test results accurately and within specified turnaround times.
  • Monitor laboratory equipment performance and carry out routine calibration and maintenance.
  • Maintain laboratory records, logbooks, test reports, and quality documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), testing standards, and quality management systems.
  • Coordinate with production, raw material handling, and process teams regarding quality issues.
  • Assist in root cause analysis of quality deviations and recommend corrective actions.
  • Participate in internal audits, quality improvement initiatives, and laboratory proficiency programs.
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness, good housekeeping, and proper chemical storage.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Follow laboratory safety procedures and wear appropriate PPE.
  • Handle chemicals, reagents, gases, and laboratory equipment safely.
  • Ensure proper storage, labeling, and disposal of chemicals and laboratory waste.
  • Report unsafe conditions, equipment malfunctions, and incidents promptly.
  • Comply with environmental, health, and safety regulations.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Accuracy and reliability of test results
  • Sample testing turnaround time (TAT)
  • Laboratory compliance with quality procedures
  • Instrument calibration and uptime
  • Reduction in testing errors and repeat analyses
  • Timely reporting of quality deviations
  • Safety compliance and zero laboratory incidents

Educational Qualification

  • B.Sc./M.Sc. in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or Industrial Chemistry.

Experience

  • Chemist: 2–5 years of experience in a DRI, steel, sponge iron, cement, or metallurgical quality control laboratory.
  • Fresh graduates may be considered for trainee positions.

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of chemical analysis techniques and laboratory practices.
  • Familiarity with DRI raw materials and product quality parameters.
  • Experience with analytical instruments such as UV-Visible spectrophotometers, muffle furnaces, balances, and moisture analyzers.
  • Understanding of ISO 9001 quality systems and laboratory documentation.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and laboratory data recording.
  • Good analytical, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
